MY STORY

How I started

Hi! My name is Debbie, and I started making novelty cakes in 2009,  after enrolling myself and my daughter into a cupcake class for Halloween - that was the beginning of my addiction to cake decorating! My first cake was Sponge Bob which I created for a friends birthday, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.  I took a couple more classes at the same local cake decorating shop which helped me create Bride and Grooms, roses and other delicate flowers, teddy bears and sugar paste high heeled shoes.

Over the next couple of years I was making cakes for my children, of which I have 4, plus 3 step children, so I was kept busy with birthdays, weddings, graduations and family holidays like Christmas and Easter.  My family started anticipating a new and exciting cake with each birthday that came along, and I got busier every year.  Close friends also received cakes as presents and soon the word began to spread.

My business "Debbie's Novelty Cakes" has been registered with the Casey City Council since May 2013 and imoved into our new Hobby Store and Cafe now located inside Mr Slotcar in Hallam.

I was lucky enough to attend the Cake Convention in Perth WA, and even luckier to get tickets to watch "The Cake Boss" Buddy Valestro decorate a full sized cake and dozens of cup cakes whilst talking to the audience.  While at the convention, I took a class with Australia's Cake Decorator of the Year Handi Mulyana and Debbie Brown from the UK. Since then I have attended 2 Austrailan Cake Decorating Network (ACDN) "Cake Camps" first being in Melbourne and the 2nd in Brisbane, where I made a full sized standing guitar cake, with the amazing Janet O'Sullivan.

Recently I started making my own Cupcake and Cake stands and have had stalls at Cakeriffic, Cake, Bake and Sweet, and Cake Expo.  The latest items I have developed are Acrylic Set up Boards. I also occasionally teach classes in cake decorating locally.

It's my dream one day to own and run a Cake Decorating School.
